WAVE ENERGY CONVERTER

The World-first wave energy converter.
Turning the wave power into commercial energy.
THE CHALLENGE
UWA's Wave Energy Research Centre pioneers a world-first marine innovation project using the M4 Wave Energy Converter to showcase the Great Southern Ocean's wave energy potential. Success could fast-track wave energy tech commercialisation in WA.
Building a robust marine structure for turbulent ocean waves is challenging. It must be commercially viable, ensuring reliability while remaining economical in construction, deployment, and maintenance.
OUR SOLUTION
SeaO2 and SMC Marine bring the vision to life, leveraging local expertise in the Great Southern to establish a supply chain and execute the M4 Wave Energy Converter prototype's design, fabrication, mooring, and launch.
Drawing on our extensive experience in challenging marine environments, we support UWA's Wave Energy Research Centre and collaborators in bringing this innovation to life.

RESULTS SO FAR
The M4 has been successfully deployed, operated, and retrieved over a 6-month period. Over 130 days of operation and 300h of power generation the team collected more than 3TB of data that will be heading into analysis over the coming months.
The M4 reached a maximum hinge angle of almost 40 degrees in waves up to 2 meters! In this sea-state the maximum mooring load was over 2000kg.
