Pioneer River Fish Habitats

New homes, more fish.

THE CHALLENGE

The Mackay Regional Council sensitive to the needs of the environment and community needed help to improve marine biodiversity around three popular fishing platforms on the Pioneer River, and enhance recreational and tourist fishing experience.

OUR SOLUTION

We deployed 45 habitat modules, robust concrete pyramids, specially built
to attract soft and hard coral, oysters, bivalves to form a living reef for fish,
like Barramundi and Mangrove Jacks to come around.

We worked with SMC Marine and with specialist environmental consultancy Catchment Solutions who designed the fish modules, and developed an economical
and environmentally considerate methodology for deployment,
using primarily local and regional partners.

RESULTS SO FAR

Barramundi and Mangrove Jacks are swimming around!

The artificial reefs improved the ecosystem health, in-stream habitats, fish populations and recreational fishing experiences for both locals and tourists to the region.
