THE CHALLENGE
In the past century, human activities, including climate change, pollution, and coastal development, led to a 30% loss of seagrass meadows, a 33% loss of mangroves globally, and a 95% loss of giant kelp forests in Tasmania. These disruptions harm natural processes, reduce biodiversity, and weaken coastal ecosystems.
OUR SOLUTION
"Blue Carbon" initiatives safeguard mangroves, seagrasses, and tidal/salt marshes, preserving their essential carbon sequestration capabilities.
Supporting these ecosystems offers benefits like marine habitat preservation, coastal protection, and community security, playing a crucial role in addressing climate change and ensuring marine biodiversity and coastal community well-being
RESULTS SO FAR
Blue Carbon habitats (mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes) capture 3 to 5 times more carbon per equivalent area than tropical forest. Blue Carbon projects are becoming increasingly popular in Australia and worldwide to protect and restore coastal ecosystems for their role in mitigating climate change.
SeaO2 actively seeks and promotes Blue Carbon projects, welcoming collaborations and partnerships for their protection and restoration.
