LARGE SCALE ARTIFICIAL REEFS

AS SEEN ON

Eurobodalla Offshore Artificial Reef

THE CHALLENGE

Australia’s waters count over 4,000 species of fish.
They help maintain the healthy ecological balance of our oceans.

To boost fish reproduction, and provide new location for fishermen to fish while easing pressure on natural reefs, NSW Department of Primary Industries went to tender for an innovative offshore artificial reef (OAR) to be installed 3.5km of Bateman’s Bay, north-east of Moruya Heads.

OUR SOLUTION

Determined to maximise biological outcomes, SeaO2 conducted a global review of OAR design. We then worked in collaboration with marine scientists, naval architects and ocean engineers to design, build and deploy a “constructed habitat”, with greater ability to promote marine biodiversity and enhance fishing opportunities than ever achieved before.

The 12m high 70 tonne steel structure, robust and economical to construct and deploy,
would withstand intense storms and strong currents on the ocean seabed
while offering a sustainable fish habitat solution.

RESULTS SO FAR

Recent footage taken by UnderseaROV on behalf of Sea02 just two months since installation has revealed a number of species residing on the reef including Morwong, Snapper, Banded Rockcod and large schools of Yellowtail Scad.
